Class Title: Roses for Southwest Florida

Instructor: Shea Porta

Class Description: Do you wish a rose garden could grace your southwest Florida home? Sign up for this class to learn from our Garden to Table Program Coordinator, Shea Porta, how to grow roses in our subtropical environment! Shea will distinguish between antique and modern garden roses, identify appropriate cultivars, give an overview of general care, and describe how to treat diseases and insect pests that may affect roses grown in our area.

Instructor Bio: Shea Porta grew up in West Palm Beach, Florida and developed a love of gardening from her mother. Currently, Shea is the Naples Botanical Garden’s Coordinator for Garden to Table, an in-the-garden teaching program for Lorenzo Walker Institute of Technology’s Culinary Arts students. Previously, Shea worked as a rosarian at Norfolk Botanical Garden in Virginia. Shea earned her Master’s of Science degree in Crop and Soil Science from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and published her research in the journal Compost Science and Utilization in 2011.
