What is Gathered Remains Community Workshop

In this hands-on workshop, participants will meet artist Lauren Shapiro and learn how she is creating the sculptures for her upcoming exhibition, What is Gathered Remains, at Naples Botanical Garden. Drawing from the Garden’s seed bank, a hidden wonder of plant species native to Florida and the Caribbean, participants will cut and arrange motifs onto special kiln paper, building compositions inspired by the textures and forms of specific plants from the collection. Participant’s kiln paper collages will then be transported and fired at Lauren’s studio, transforming designs into cast glass tiles contributing to the exhibition.

About the Artist
Lauren Shapiro (b.1984) is an artist and explorer who lives and works in Miami, Florida. She integrates ceramics and technology to communicate insights from the natural world, often collaborating with scientists to influence projects that highlight the diverse ecosystems of South Florida and beyond. She received her MFA from the University of Miami in 2016 and has received awards and commission from prestigious institutions like the Knight Foundation and the Andy Warhol Foundation. Her work has been exhibited internationally and exists in Soho House Art Collection and Jorge M. Perez Collection. She maintains a researched approach to creating, continuing her exploration of new media and collaborative commissions like the one at Naples Botanical Garden.
