Gardens and forests of Vietnam, Laos, Malaysia and Singapore with Chad Husby

March 06, 2018 | 2 - 3 pm
FGCU Kapnick Center Buehler Auditorium at Naples Botanical Garden

Event Description

In the spring of 2017 Chad Husby of Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden participated in the sixth Southeast Asian Botanical Gardens Network meeting in Dalat, Vietnam.  This provided a great opportunity to meet colleagues from botanical gardens throughout Southeast Asia and to explore some of the remarkable flora of southern Vietnam, including the legendary flat-needled Pinus krempfii.  From there he traveled to Laos to visit the Pha Tad Ke Botanical Garden in Laos, then botanical gardens and nurseries in Singapore and the Cameron Highlands of Malaysia.  This talk will illustrate the botanical and personal highlights of these explorations.

  • Tuesday, March 6
  • 2-3pm, FGCU Kapnick Center Buehler Auditorium at Naples Botanical Garden
  • $15 Members / $20 Non-Members

Dr. Chad Husby is Botanical Horticulturist at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden.  His main focus is finding, cultivating, and propagating new plants to enhance horticulture and botanical collections.  He worked to build a large collection of tropical conifers at the Montgomery Botanical Center where he was Collections Manager for eight years and he continues to focus on plant groups that have not received adequate attention, from conifers and ferns to foliage, flowering trees and unusual fruits.  Chad also enjoys educating students and the public about plant exploration, horticulture and botany.  His scientific research ranges from plant ecophysiology and horticulture to conservation and systematics.
