With his century-old camera, Clyde Butcher has been exploring and documenting the Everglades for more than three decades. The result is a stunning collection of large-format black-and-white photographs that capture untouched parts of the nation’s largest subtropical wilderness. Delicate ecosystems, rare botanical specimens, and sweeping landscapes bring the wonder of this mysterious part of our country to light.
America’s Everglades: Through the Lens of Clyde Butcher highlights Butcher’s artistic eye as well as his deep and long-held commitment to conservation. His work challenges us to explore the heritage we share in the natural world and to work together to protect it. Through his photography, Butcher hopes to educate the public by bringing environmental issues to the forefront of public consciousness.

About the Artist
Often referred to as “Florida’s Ansel Adams,” Clyde Butcher is widely recognized as the foremost landscape photographer in America today. Known as much for his commitment to the environment as he is for his captivating black-and-white images, Butcher uses his lens as a platform to inspire and educate people about the importance of preserving the beauty of wild Florida and other fragile landscapes.
Butcher’s unique approach to his art is also something he is admired and known for. Literally immersing himself in the landscape, often wading chest-deep in the swampy waters with his large-format view cameras, he waits to “feel” the right moment, which sometimes take years. His stunning, mural-sized photographs immerse the viewer into the environment and create the awe-inspiring sense that you are there.
