Lecture: Nature’s Bounty: Exploring Plants as Food in History, Conservation, and Our Future

March 08, 2017 | 1 - 3 pm

Event Description

Meet researchers from the International Center for Tropical Botany, a partnership between Florida International University and the National Tropical Botanical Garden at The Kampong, and experience a virtual journey through agricultural history, modern day uses of plants, and efforts toward sustainability. We’ll begin by featuring the chickpea, the world’s second most cultivated food legume, outlining farming and conservation efforts in Africa, then focus on the Brazil nut, one of the world’s most valuable non-timber forest species and the cornerstone for many conservation initiatives in the Amazon. Next we’ll dive deeper into tropical plant conservation and enjoy a menu of creative and tasty dishes featuring chickpeas, Brazil nuts, organic fruits and vegetables.

  • Wednesday, March 8
  • 1 – 3 pm, Kapnick Hall in Naples Botanical Garden
  • $35 Members / $40 Non-Members

Speakers include experts from FIU’s International Center for Tropical Botany: Stephany Alvarez-Ventura, Program Manager, FIU School of Environment, Arts and Society; Dr. Brian Machovina, Postdoctoral;  Fellow & Lecturer, Department of Earth & Environment and International Center for Tropical Botany, FIU; Cara Rockwell, Research Assistant Professor, Department of Earth & Environment and International Center for Tropical Botany, FIU; and Dr. Eric Bishop von Wettberg, Associate Professor, Department of Biological Sciences and International Center for Tropical Botany, FIU.
