A native of Youngstown, Ohio, Carl attended Rutgers College and graduated in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree in economics, joining Marsh & McLennan as an account representative.
In 1973, Carl joined Bowne & Co, Inc. as a sales representative based in New York City. During his 37 years career at Bowne, he served in numerous sales and executive positions. In 1989, he led the company’s internal expansion, opening 10 offices around the world. In 1996, he was named Executive Vice President and a member of its Board of Directors. He was appointed President in 1998. He retired in 2004 but remained on the Board until the sale of the company in 2010.
In 2005, Carl joined GS Partners, a credit-focused Private Equity firm based in New York City and London. He served as a Managing Director and helped raise two funds, one for distressed debt and another for European Mezzanine Lending, working in this capacity before retiring from GS Partners in 2010.
Carl has also served on the Boards of Day International, Checkprinters Inc., Bankruptcy Management Solutions, and from 2015 – 2024, of Naples Botanical Garden. In December 2025, Carl assumed the role of the Garden’s Interim President & CEO.
