Naples Botanical Garden offers limited quantities of Evenstad Horticulture Campus grown selections of rare, regionally appropriate, plants for sale. These selected species are well adapted to our local environment to be great performers in Southwest Florida’s challenging climate. Our plants have been uniquely grown in tall forestry pots and have not been allowed to become root bound.
The summer rainy season is the perfect time to add something new to your landscape. We are offering many species that will thrive once planted in the right location. Cassias
Pink Shower Tree – Cassia javanica
Size: Approximately 30 feet
Care: Average, well-draining soil and full sun
About: Blooms with pink, pendulous flowers

Peach Blossom Cassia – Cassia bakeriana
Size: 30 – 50 feet

About: Large clusters of pink flowers in spring after the tree loses its leaves

Golden Shower Tree – Cassia fistula
Size: 15 – 45 feet

About: 18-inch-long clusters of pendulous flowers

Pink Shower Tree – Cassia grandis
Size: 30 – 50 feet

About: Loses its leaves when it develops large clusters of pendulous pink flowers in the spring

Bronze Shower Tree – Cassia moschata
Size: Medium sized, about 30 feet

Edible Plants
Banana – Musa sp. ‘Dward Red’
About: Dwarf variety growing 6 – 8 feet in height. Sweet lady finger banana that produces red skinned fruit.
Care: Full sun, plenty of water.

Papaya – Carica papaya, ‘red lady’
About: Small, sparsely branched tree to 10 – 15 feet. Should start to set red fleshed fruit around 3 feet in height. This hybrid is heat tolerant and resistant to Papaya Ring Spot Virus.
Care: Full sun, plenty of water.

Roselle – Hibiscus sabdariffa
About: Annual/semi-perennial shrub growing to 7 feet tall. Red calyxes are harvested in fall after flowering for use in tea.

Sweet Tamarind –Tamarindus indica
About: Large, wind resistant tree to 50 feet, but often smaller. Commonly used in Southeast Asian and Caribbean recipes. Usually begins to produce fruit within 4 – 5 years from planting. Flowers in the spring and matures in mid – late summer.
Care: Full sun, well draining soil.

Turmeric ‘Hawaii Red” – Curcuma longa
About: Herbaceous perennial plant that produces rhizome for culinary use. Typically planted in spring/early summer and harvested in late fall as the plant will become dormant and lose foliage. Rhizome can be dug up to use in cooking and saved for planting the following growing season. This variety is sourced from Hawaii and contains 4.8%-6% curcumin in dried samples.

About: These are adapted species to alkaline soil. Tolerant of Southwest Florida climate and conditions.

Florida Thatch Palm – Thrinax radiata
Size: 40 feet tall with a trunk diameter of only 5 inches
Care: Sandy, well-draining soil and full sun, tolerant of salt and wind
About: Slow growing, accent or specimen tree with a 6-foot-wide crown of palmate, dark green leaves. Good in the landscape, along roadsides, and median strips. Good for containers.

About: Guapira discolor is also known as the blolly tree or beef tree. It can tolerate short periods of drought but is not tolerant of long-term saltwater flooding. Good mixed buffer plant.

About: Salt tolerant and suitable to dry environments; has white flowers and red berries

Bridalveil Tree – Caesalpinia granadillo

Carib Wood – Poitea carinalis
About: Shrub or small tree growing up to 15 – 20 feet. Pea shaped red flowers bloom in the dry season.

Cinnamon Bark – Canella winterana
Size: 20 – 30 feet
Care: Moderate moisture but well-draining soil and full sun to dappled shade
About: Native tree with small flowers and red-purple berries. Slow growing with colorful fruit, manageable as a shrub or small tree.

Desert Cassia– Senna polyphylla
Size: Up to 15 feet
Care: Average, well draining soil and full sun to partial shade
About: Yellow flowers almost year-round, compact flowering tree.


Florida Keys Blackbead – Pithecellobium keyense
Size: Shrub or small tree
Care: Sandy, well-draining soil and full sun
About: Powderpuff-like flowers with coiling red seed pods that slip open to reveal a black seed. Good native tree with small fragrant flowers and seeds that attract birds. Good for border/ buffer plantings.

Agave – Agave
Size: Large succulent, 4 – 5 feet wide
Care: Well-draining soil in full sun
About: Eventually develops a trunk

Jacaranda sp.
Size: Medium size tree to about 25 feet
Care: Bluish-purple trumpet shaped flowers. The tree drops all its leaves when in bloom during the dry season.
About: Average, well-draining soil and full to partial sun.


Jamaican Rain tree – Brya ebenus
Size: Compact tree
Care: Well-draining soil in full sun
About: Features small, golden flowers


Jurema – Chloroleucon tortum
Size: 15 – 20 feet
Care: Average, well-draining soil and full sun
About: Critically endangered tree from Brazil, distinguished by mottled gray and brown; contorted trunk and limbs give it a muscle-like appearance. Small to medium tree. Great accent/ decorative specimen known for their bark and unique structure.

Langkawi Crape Myrtle – Lagerstroemia langkawiensis
Size: Up to 25 feet
Care: Average, well-draining soil and full sun to partial sun
About: New leaves begin as crimson and fade to green. Pink flowers bloom in late spring. Showy flowering medium size trees. Brilliant new foliage once or twice a year.

Mason’s Congo Sansevieria – Sansevieria masoniana
Size: 2 – 4 feet
Care: Plant this snake plant in a loose, well-draining soil. Water when the soil has completely dried out. Feed this plant with a balanced houseplant fertilizer once a year.
About: Dark green leaves with smudged, light green spots. Also known as the whale fin or shark fin snake plant, it is native to the Democratic Republic of Congo. Low growing succulent, shade tolerant, and not as aggressive as common Sansevieria.

Philodendron ‘Rojo Congo’
Size: About 3 feet
Care: Average, well-draining soil and bright light to shade
About: Shrubby plant with broad, dark green leaves and reddish stems; new leaves are deep burgundy before turning green

Poitea carinalis
This is a small, deciduous tree or shrub from the Caribbean that blooms from February to April with pea-shaped, purple flowers. It is a great performer in South Florida.

Portlandia grandiflora
Portlandia grandiflora are known for their statement, white trumpet flowers that boast 5 – 6 inch blooms. These are wonderfully fragrant and add interest to any garden or patio. These can easily be kept in containers.

Pride of Barbados – Caesalpinia pulcherrima f. flava
Size: 6 – 15 feet
Care: Sandy, well-draining soil and full sun
About: Resembles a royal poinciana with yellow flowers grouped together on erect stems

Primavera – Roseodendron donnell-smithii
Size: 50 feet or more
Care: Average, well-draining soil and full sun
About: Yellow trumpet-shaped flowers bloom in clusters during the dry season

Satin Leaf – Chrysophyllum oliviforme
Size: 10 – 15 feet
Care: Tolerant of most soils, well-draining or moist. Is happy in sun or shade.
About: Native tree with beautiful leaves that are dark green on top and satiny, light-copper underneath. It has small, creamy-yellow flowers, and black, edible fruit.

Red Powderpuff – Calliandra haematocephala
Size: 6 – 20 feet
Care: Moderate moisture, fertile, well-draining soil and full sun to bright, filtered light. Can be hard pruned after winter-spring bloom.
About: This small, shrub-like tree blooms with red “powder-puff” flowers. Good for pollinators

Wattapama – Poitea florida (purple)
Size: 15 – 20 feet
Care: Average, well-draining soil, and full sun
About: Shrub or small tree with pea-shaped purple flowers that bloom in the dry season


White Geiger Tree – Cordia superba
Size:10 – 20 feet
Care: Sandy, well-draining soil and full sun
About: Small tree with white, trumpet-shaped flowers in warm months. The dark green leaves have a sandpaper-like texture.

Wild Banyan Tree – Ficus citrifolia
Size: Up to 50 feet
Care: Need bright, indirect light, warm temperatures, and high humidity. They prefer moist soil and should be watered regularly.
About: Large, native tree. Good buffer or specimen tree. One of only two native ficus species. More contained than a strangler fig. Good wildlife attractant.

Vanilla Orchid – Vanilla planifolia
Size: This vining orchid can grow 8 – 10 feet indoors or 50 – 70 feet outdoors.
Care: Needs bright, indirect light, high humidity, and regular watering
About: Known as the vanilla orchid, this plant is the source of vanilla beans and vanilla flavoring. When the short-lived blooms become fertilized, they sprout a long, slender bean pod. Easy to grow vine on shady trellis or tree.
