The vast tropical fruit collection is planted throughout the cultivated gardens and represents tastes and traditions from throughout the world. The collection encompasses things commonly found in American supermarkets like pineapples, mangos, and bananas, as well as delicacies unfamiliar in this country. These include: Brazil’s grape-like jaboticaba (Plinia cauliflora); Asia’s giant jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus); and from the Caribbean, sugar apple (Annona squamosa) and Barbados cherry (Malpighia emarginata), a shrub whose fruits pack a walloping dose of vitamin C.
In all, the Garden has nearly 600 fruit, nut, and other edible plants on display throughout the Kapnick Brazilian Garden, Lea Asian Garden, Scott Florida Garden, and Kapnick Caribbean Garden.
